Purpose

My interpretation of spring cleaning!

The laminate flooring has all been taken out of the house, the hardwood floors have been started. They are about 75% completed and what a difference they make! We originally were going to go with bamboo, but after a lot of research and samples we decided to go with a dark stained oak. It's beautiful when clean, which unfortunately doesn't last long in this house with 2 little boys and a big dog!

I have always found that one change often is the springboard for many others. Putting in beautiful new flooring made me realize how many other things in the house don't look as beautiful anymore. I am finding it looks cold and empty without accessories, kind of like a model home. There's no personality in the house and somehow I didn't see it as much before.
My hubby and I celebrated 10 years together this past Sunday. When I say we celebrated we really didn't. It was just like any other ordinary day, which was actually a lot more perfect than it sounds. He went to jewelry stores looking for something to get me for our anniversary but decided that maybe I should pick something out that I am really going to like because after all spending that much money on jewelry it should be something I will wear and love. I knew exactly what I was looking for, something with purpose. Something with symbolism, something that meant something to us. Not just a piece of jewelry but something that would be worn and would make me think of him, of us, every time I looked at it.

Why am I talking about jewelry? What does it have to do with my lack of home accessories? Well... I look  at accessories the same way. They are the jewelry for the home, but I don't wear costume jewelry. I only wear things that mean something to me. I think that's the reason I have so much trouble with accessories, I want them to mean something, have purpose in telling the story of who we are just like my jewelry.
